Be Happy or Sad... It's Your Choice

August 2018

"Why the long face?" was my question to my son when he returned one evening from work. "Aaah..I got fried today by my stupid boss who has an ego bigger than a building," was his answer. In fact, he was so unhappy that evening that he could hardly eat. As I was making breakfast the next day, I was surprised to hear him whistling in the bathroom. Then, he rushed into the kitchen, grabbed a piece of toast and washed it down with milk before running down the garden path to his car. "Have a good day son!" I called after him. At that, he turned around, gave me a bright smile and said, "Thanks mum. I sure will try."

  1. Well, I wish more people will approach life with that sort of positivism. Honestly, every one of us face all types of situations every day. Sometimes, we can sort things out but at other times we cannot. If we were to treat every bad turn as a catastrophe, we can become so burdened that it will drive us "mad".

  2. In the end, it is about making choices…choices that you can live with. Try then to look at things more positively and select choices that are better and even enjoyable, which leads to better outcomes. But some may ask, "I do not know what to choose. Whatever I choose, it is not going to make me a winner". If you are in such a situation, seek the opinion from someone neutral who is more experienced and wiser.

  3. It is however important to note that no one can be either happy or sad all the time. It is also difficult to define what makes one really happy or sad. It is all relative. Sometimes, what makes one individual happy, can make another sad. For example, the one who succeeds in getting the top post will be elated compared to the one who did not. Sometimes, people are sad when you least expect them to be and the reverse is true.

  4. The attitude of a person when making a choice determines his state of euphoria or depression. In this busy world of ours, where people seem to only care about themselves, the right attitude is the best armour of the day. A dose of discernment also helps to make us to make decisions. When a person can discern between what is right and what is wrong, his clear conscience makes him a happier person. To a certain extent, we can choose to happy or sad! Just make up your mind and put a little effort into it.
