Moving

July 2018

Have you ever asked yourself the question, "am I ready to move to the next level?"

  1. Perhaps not, and you are not alone as many people when asked, had the same answer. There is a tendency for people to feel lulled into a state of existence, a comfort zone for some and a state of complacency for others.

  2. Indeed, moving forward can be challenge. It can mean dealing with change, added responsibilities and new challenges. It can mean facing a new "normal" which is totally unfamiliar.

  3. So why then does anyone want to move? There are many reasons, most of which are linked to the word "opportunity". While the opportunity of improving one’s livelihood and securing higher income is the usual reason for accepting the move, there are yet others who want the move because of boredom or conflict. Some even cite compulsion as the reason to move, stating that they are forced to accept a higher position and make room for others.

  4. Whatever is the reason for the move, it is important to be ready for the move. Some of the ways of getting into a state readiness are as follows:

    • Find out more about the move

If you are moved to a new position, find out what are your new responsibilities. Know more about your new boss or bosses and their expectations. Try to find mentors and friendly parties you could refer to who will not lead you astray.

    • Prepare your mind to accept the change, even the unexpected.

It is futile to spend sleepless nights worrying. Just embrace the situation and go with the flow with an open mind.

    • Equip yourself with more knowledge and skills to deal with the demands of the new job. Find opportunities to up-skill yourself through hands-on training.

    • Assess the job, attitude of peers and work environment before suggesting changes

    • Do not wear your frustration on your sleeve for all to see.

Smile, stay friendly and engage with the team.

    • Avoid being hostile to subordinates and team. Be suggestion friendly.

    • Evaluate your own moves – are they constructive?

The most important thing about making the move is to have the right attitude, as this will be the basis for success and your future moves.
