The Power of AI

October 2018

“Goodness! What is AI? Is it the name of a person?” This was the question a retired colleague asked at a recent tea gathering.

Well… AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, which in today’s world refers to any device or machine that mimics "cognitive" functions that humans do, such as "learning" and "problem solving". “Interesting, isn’t it?… that machines can ‘think’ and ‘reason’”. In fact, the idea of AI started back in 1956 and after many painful years have finally reached the stage today wherein man has recognised that AI will be an integral part of our future.

I was told that many tools have been used to develop AI, drawing from diversified fields, including, computer science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, linguistics, psychology, economics. AI will be central in the development of smart cities for infrastructure development, planning and maintenance. Using data analytics, physical and digital technologies will combine and enable man to see things in a different light. Efficiency and effectiveness will be greatly enhanced.

Does this realisation frighten you? Some fear the possibility of being replaced because of inability to compete with machines. This is where we have to we have to remember, who created what? It is man that has developed AI, and not the reverse.

The average person may not completely understand AI and may not even be aware that he is using a device that uses AI (eg smart phones). This does not matter. What matters most is for man to have a positive attitude and to keep abreast with technology, learning how to use it well to serve specific purposes, especially in helping him to perform better at work. After all, the hardware and the software are mere tools for data analytics to churn out useful information.

For the older generation or more matured workers, do not be alarm if you cannot catch up with the young ones. You just have to do the needful and find time to read and learn how the technology works. Work with your younger colleagues. Avoid being left behind in discussions so that no one will treat you as an uninformed boss. Remember your skills and experience will be your best armour at your work place. After all, what is technology without man to use it for the advantage of mankind.
