Challenge Me!!!

May 2018

When was the last time you challenged anyone to perform better?  Better yet, have any of your staff ever asked you to challenge him or her to produce higher quality work.

Some may laugh, but this is the new thinking amongst the young talented individuals.  They feel stifled and suppressed in their roles where they have to conform to rules, regulations and defined practices.

It is crucial for employers to understand that their employees are seeking a career experience not mere pay-outs.  Depending on the nature of the business, employers can experiment with this approach of motivating their employees. This approach may work well in fast moving and creative businesses, where staff are expected to deliver outstanding and unexpected results.

Employers must try to understand the psyche of the employees – what makes them tick and what drives them. Are they aligned to your company’s values and do they believe in those values and your brand?  These are all core to creating their drive.

Employees must discover meaning in their relationship with the company and management.  They must find their work meaningful enough for them to make improvements and to achieve higher heights. For most talented people, reward for an outstanding delivery is the achievement itself. Monetary gains of course, if available, are also welcomed.

Competition in the world of business is stiff and staff pinching is a normal practice. As such, employers must strive to be the employer of choice and this is not confined to the pay and perk package.  Job scopes have to be reviewed and made more exciting to attract talent.

Managing human resources in the 21st century indeed has become very challenging.  Indeed, human capital is the most important resource for most Corporations and its quality that will drive the strategic direction of the Corporation.
